 The Traveling Lactation Consultant Podcast

Katie Oshita (she/her) is a nurse, Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), wife, and mother of two. Katie struggled with breastfeeding both her kids, but was dismissed by all providers, being told that everything was normal.  Working in a hospital nursing, as  Labor and Delivery and NICU RN for 15 years, Katie saw parents struggle with how to feed their baby.  Some families had great support and things went well, but most found the lack of caring, evidence based support when they needed it.

Watching so many families struggle Katie knew that they needed more.  Families needed support that was knowledgeable, compassionate and root caused based.  Families needed all the information and holistic options that were safe and effective to support both parent and baby.

In 2019 Katie opened her private practice to help families meet their goals.  Instead of quick 5-10 mins in hospital visits, private practice meant time to listen, assess and make a plan together with parents. Katie specializes in oral function/tongue tie, gut health, and root cause medicine.

Katie lives and works on stolen land in Washington, USA. When not working you will likely find Katie in her garden with her chickens, enjoying life in the PNW.

Meet Natalie Miles

BS, IBCLC

Natalie (she/her) is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with a bachelor’s degree in Maternal Child Health – Lactation Consulting. She started up breastfeeding support group as a military spouse abroad 13-years ago. Her passion for helping families has only increased over the years. She specializes in oral function/tongue tie. She also provides support in everything from prenatal breastfeeding education, low milk supply, mastitis and swollen duct management, flange fitting, breast refusal, bottle refusal and more.

Natalie’s earliest memory of breastfeeding is of watching her mom pump for her baby sister. She decided then, at 8-years-old, she would breastfeed her babies. Little did she know then the challenges she would face as each of her four children was born with oral ties.  It was during the early days of nursing her oldest that a lactation specialist told her she would make a good IBCLC. Soon enough, she began working towards becoming an IBCLC, all while living abroad and through several military moves, becoming an IBCLC in 2017.

She has spent more than seven years working as an IBCLC on the mom-baby unit and special care nursery at multiple local hospitals, assisting parents immediately after the birth of their baby. She has worked over two years in the outpatient lactation setting. Working in two different settings has helped Natalie become a more well-rounded lactation consultant. She finds the work extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

Born and raised in Vermont, she now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her four children and her husband. In her free time she likes to travel, downhill ski, read, bake and spend time with her family.

What Some My Clients Say…

“Katie is amazing! Incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough. She got me quickly back on track after a painful start to nursing, helped with latching, finding new more comfortable positions, and came up with a pumping plan for when I return to work. I would highly recommend her to anyone in need of a lactation consultant!” Katie N, mom of 1

Katie’s exactly how a provider and lactation consultant should be. She asked questions and LISTENED, with her whole heart and mind. We weren’t a number or a protocol, but a unique mama and baby who needed help with our breastfeeding journey. I was most impressed with her knowledge of oral ties and how to navigate pre and post-care of a tie revision procedure. She checked in on us often, constantly reminded me to give myself grace being newly postpartum, and gave us all the tools we need for a successful breastfeeding journey. We are 2.5 months in currently, and I have no doubt we have so much beauty ahead. She has helped me to love nursing my baby instead of being afraid of it — like I was with my first. My husband thought she was exceptional too!” Brittany, mom of 2

“I owe so many thanks to Katie for helping me. My daughter was still not taking a bottle at 8 months. We tried 6-7 bottles and took classes about how to get your baby to take a bottle — nothing worked. I work full time from home and could no longer sustain breastfeeding and having a full-time job. Katie changed everything. We skipped the bottle entirely and went straight to the honey bear bottle with a straw, and it worked! It took us 3 days to get consistency with our daughter, but now she drinks from the cup, and our lives are changed! I wish I would have found Katie earlier and would recommend her to anyone struggling with transitioning from breast to bottle/cup.”

Kelly, mom of 2

An insta-famous IBCLC recommended Katie to me after I spent months trying to find an IBCLC that took my insurance. I'm so grateful to Katie for her expertise. She successfully made assessments about my daughter via telehealth visits (great for flexibility) and provided thorough care plan notes. Another great thing about Katie is her devotion to education. I always say a good LC knows more than all the medical professionals and that is Katie! My doctors had it wrong but Katie was on point and thus validated my mother's intuition. I appreciate that she makes the effort to accept insurance as well because lactation support is so critical to mothers. I definitely recommend working with Katie- Camille, mom of 1
