Band-aids are not a treatment

I hate how in this country we have gotten to the point of band-aids instead of treatment. Here are a few examples:

-pain walking = shoes inserts/orthodics

-chronic headaches/migrains = medications

-pretty much any chronic health issue = medication or dismissed

What is wrong with this? Western medicine is not looking for the ROOT cause, it focuses on medications to cover up the symptoms of the problem, but not to actually diagnosis and treat the actual problem.

Where I see this with parents is fussy babies, colic, gassy, poor weight gain, constipation and sleep issues. Basically everything that is tough in the first 6 months. I find it really sad that when patients reach out to their primary care, and they ask for help with X, the frequently have their concerns brushed off or just are told to wait it out, or take a pill.

So, what can you do the you have a problem? Well, depends on what it is. For me I have chronic health issues (I have had a joint replacement, have a chronic pain/nerve issue and other things), I search for holistic and natural minded providers. Sometimes that is a Naturopath or I am hoping to work with a Functional Medicine doctor in the short term.

If you are struggling with feeding or infant issues, you need a holistically minded provider- most of the time you can find an IBCLC who will help you look at the ROOT cause. If a Pediatrician has told you that “your baby will grow out of colic” or “spitting up is a laundry problem”, you need a provider who will help figure out what is wrong so that treatment will actually work!

Treating the symptoms is never going to fix the root problem, so the symptoms will return and you will just need more and more band-aids. If you treat the root cause, then the problem will actually go away! What a wonderful idea.
